Have you considered whether a sledgehammer would be more or less  
effective than an axe?

Furthermore, (a) do not leave the battery in, unless you want a  
lithium fire, and (b) perhaps avoid supporting the middle, so the  
first blow is more spectacular than just being slightly flattened:
