Looks like there may be something in the works -- "fsnotify".  The history is 
a little uninspiring, though; the driving force behind the development is 
someone who wants to build malware scanners, and the kernel devs really 
dislike that.  However, it looks like fsnotify could be simpler, cleaner and 
more powerful than inotify or dnotify, and would simplify the VFS layer 
because inotify and dnotify could actually be built on top of it.

I'll just keep my fingers crossed.
