Well, the web browser was running a my desktop machine which is
connected to the Internet with a 4 Mbps SDSL line. The Tahoe gateway is
located in a data center, where the SDSL line happens to end up, with
100 Mbps Internet access.

A cumulative encoding speed of less than 1 Mbps seems to be the limiting
factor on that specific machine.
