 The 1.8.1 release is past due, and it is blocked by this issue and by
 #1264.

 Perhaps we should go ahead and release 1.8.1 as-is, with the {{{-m}}}
 option broken (and, re #1264, with download performance when {{{K}}} is
 large worse than v1.7).
