Sorry for being imprecise. My "much more than necessary" was referring
to my permanent, unfair comparison to rsync: neither K=N=1 nor the
helper would prevent Tahoe from uploading only a tiny modified part in
a huge elsewhere unmodified file.

The intended redundancy is not the problem. Due to oldschool IPv4 NAT
borders, my grid is a star-topology with a (high-bandwidth) helper in
the middle.
