 Okay, I would still prefer plan 3 (simple for users, more complicated for
 implementors, allows multiple log gatherers), but only if someone else
 does the work of implementing it. :-) Since I'm doing the work, I've
 changed my mind to plan 1 (simple for users, simple for implementors,
 doesn't allow multiple log gatherers).
