 I'm -1 on a 1.8.4, and +1 on including a forward-looking fix in a 1.9.1
 (if it happens). I'm -1 on having a separate alias file: I think that's
 too much complexity (and long-term burden). I think folks are unlikely to
 downgrade their local install very much.

 Do we have a patch?

 davidsarah: I guess we need some other sort of cheap-to-write exception
 for code to express "Sorry, I can only handle a limited range of things,
 and you've just exceeded my abilities". I agree "assert" isn't the best
 choice for that, but I'd also like to avoid needing a huge amount of code
 (and tests) to express such things. Not sure what the best approach is.
