 write-detection for progress on this issue. I'm not convinced that I've
 quite paged all of the context for this ticket back into my head yet, but
 my gut feeling so far is that the posted patch will need a couple of
 additional tests. Fortunately the changes themselves haven't bitrotted
 much.
