 I agree with most of this design, but I'm unconvinced of the value of
 requiring an explicit `tub.location = AUTODETECT`, rather than keeping
 that as the default as it is now. The `[node] anonymize` flag would still
 disallow auto-detection, that's independent of whether auto-detection is
 the default.
