Tempting as it is to ask “but then how the heck does it work on Windows!?”
I think maybe [https://bitbucket.org/cffi/cffi/issue/109/enable-sane-
packaging-for-cffi this issue] on the CFFI tracker is the place to keep
discussing this stuff, and make sure that the cffi developers are aware of
tahoe's requirements.
