 This might be way more trouble than it's worth, but it would be great if I
 could send a link to a friend for a file on my grid that my friend could
 use without installing tahoe and without me running a public gateway.

 Maybe it's possible write a tahoe-lafs client in all javascript and using
 WebRTC.

 For example, here's a bittorrent client that runs in a web browser:
