 I have a branch based on rebasing instead, which gets to about the same
 point, but there are tests failing depending on the value of
 `PYTHONHASHSEED` -- it looks like "because it's choosing different shares"
 and/or the tests are wrong. But, I wouldn't expect the hashseed to affect
 how we choose share-placement.
