New description:

 * setup.py is 427 lines
 * _auto_deps.py is 90 lines
 * around 25 lines of `__init__`.py are dedicated to dynamic version
 discovery

 This complexity is probably not necessary.

 * setup.py can be replaced by setup.cfg
 * _auto_deps.py is ... unused?  And can just be deleted?
