[volunteergrid2-l] Applications in the last week

Hi all,

(ATT: This mail ends abruptly, because it discusses many of the same
topics as Shawn's last mail, and was written at the same time. The
continuation is in my follow-up mail).

First: welcome to everyone who has joined this list in the last days,
and thank you for your interest!

Second, to the existing grid members: I have been quiet in the last week
or so, without interfering at all, because I wanted to see how things
are developing.

To sum up the current situation (I may very well have gotten some
numbers wrong here, or have missed something, so correct me if I'm wrong):

- the infrastructure that is currently "live" consists of 17 servers,
provided by 14 different people. At the time of writing, that (very,
very roughly) means 6 TB of used space, and 8 TB of available space (not
taking into account redundancy requirements, i.e. a file requiring a
multiple of its actual size to be stored).

- there have been 6 "applications" of new members to join the grid, of
which some have very clear ideas and commitments, some are not really
sure what it's all about, and some are not sure if their technical
equipment is enough to take part.

Since VG2 is a decentralized system, run by technically-inclined people
(not lawyers...) from all over the planet, and without a very clear
hierarchy, consensus is mostly reached by "common sense": if somebody
makes a sensible proposal, and there are no objections, the proposal is
accepted. (quote: "On things like this, I tend to do "voting" by
affirmation -- if there is NO discussion, or NO compelling reason given
for not adopting the new policy or practice, I consider the "motion" to
"carry by affirmation." No vote is taken, the discussion is recorded in
the "minutes" of the email list, and the policy is affirmed as accepted
on the list and the wiki is updated.")

Of course, this doesn't mean that some decision that has been taken
before cannot be questioned or re-evaluated afterwards. As said, we're a
bunch of geeks after all, not a bunch of lawyers. (up to you to guess
the connotation of "geek" and "lawyer" ;-) )

So that said, and looking at the list of our potential new members...

(This has had so much overlap with Shawn's mail that I cut it from this
mail and am writing it as a follow-up instead)
