Great analysis. This is certainly also possible for the cerezal
node as the connection here uses an off-the-shelf DSL / NAT 
router. In the last days, I have seen lost SSH connections via the
external address when the connection was idle for an extended time.

Would it be helpful if I send a tcpdump for some period like 20 minutes?
Perhaps this allows to confirm or exclude some of the possibilities.

Second guessing: for communications, never an effective strategy....
