[volunteergrid2-l] status report?

Based on the reports of those who have attempted to store files on the grid
and the failures they have experienced, it has become apparent that VG2 is
very "brittle" with just 15-17 nodes. For whatever reason some nodes fail
to accept shares at (what appears to be) random. When stores are tested,
Tahoe-LAFS throws warnings and stores are constantly in need of maintenance
even when all nodes are available.

After closely watching the list for the last year and analyzing the results
my mental "estimatorinator" gives me a number of 35-50 nodes before VG2
would be able to be used without the brittleness the users are currently
experiencing.

Many of us have been evangelists for this project, but we have had very
little buy-in. Even some of our best supporters have simply shut down nodes
when they relocated for work because it was a propitious time to gracefully
exit the net without having to make excuses rather than bothering to
restart the node at their new location.

I have hosted the introducer and run nodes for the last year and hosted the
wiki. I have no files stored on the grid. The steady stream of reports from
those who have have demonstrated that the grid is not sufficiently stable.
Yes it will reliably store files, but they will require constant
maintenance to prevent them from rapidly decaying.

Since none of the grid members have reported success with the grid, and all
reports so far have shown the same level of frustration, I think that we
should start discussing a sunset on the project. I know that one grid
member I have visited with recently has already decided to remove a node
from the grid. I think that a formal discussion on closing down the grid
and setting a date is in the best interest of the community.
