Oh, one more question: do any of the files or directories in this tree have
non-ASCII names? There are some known issues with unicode characters and the
"cp" command (see tickets #565 and #534), and it's possible that this is
causing a problem when trying to write out those files.

Also, was there anything in the original source directory that wasn't a
regular file or directory? Perhaps a symlink? We don't have any special
handling for symlinks, so I'm not sure what that would do.
