I find it interesting that Tahoe's attempt to be very resilient by working
if a connection can be made from either direction actually seems to create a
lot of trouble.  If a firewalled/NATed node were simply unable to connect
or, like a bittorrent client, was obviously degraded, it would be much
easier to troubleshoot these sorts of problems.

But as it is, it all works just fine until you add a second misconfigured
node, and then people scratch their heads because they can get to all of the
_other_ nodes, so why not that one?

Application of the "fail fast" principle would help here, I think.
