I'm back home (I guess... I'm getting fuzzy on where "home" is, lately -- I
guess home is where your heart is, and my family is in Utah, so I'm home)
and working on the machine.
It looks like somehow the upgrade simply erased the partition tables on five
of my eight drives. Since all my partition tables are identical modulo
drive size-driven differences which are very predictable, I was able to
recreate the partition tables and all of the RAID arrays started right up,
no problem, as did the LVM volume groups and logical volumes.
So... in a word, I'm back up! There's a little problem with the boot
process I have to fix, then I have to test GRUB2 booting (I'm fairly certain
it was the GRUB2 installation during the upgrade that somehow hosed the
partition tables), then reconnect the NICs and reconfigure my home network
(which I had to reconfigure two weeks ago to remove gratch so my family
would have Internet service until I got back) and then gratch should be back
in the grid, all shares intact.
