It would be, for example, quite interesting to know whether
latencies of individual storage nodes are actually correlated in some
way. So far, I understand that shares upload takes as long until
the slowest needed-for-happiness storage node confirms.
Storage service should be mutually independent but that's not
what it looks like.

Networked systems can have interesting and surprising properties. 
I remember a heterogeneous Unix network with 30+ hosts from my 
university time that occasionally could be brought down by a single
email plus a single non-responding node....
