I don't think that it really makes a difference, from an operational
point of view. Tahoe isn't really cpu-intensive (rather, most of the
performance is I/O-bound), so a qemu environment shouldn't hurt.
On the other hand, if you're running it in a VM, you'll have to take
care of all the network settings manually, i.e. you have to make sure
that all ports which need to be accessed from the outside are properly
forwarded from the host machine to the VM. Unless I'm getting something
wrong, it seems like tahoe is also listening on additional, random,
ports (in addition to the ones configured) while it is running. This
might quickly turn into an administration nightmare if it's run inside a VM.
Then again, you can easily setup and run tahoe under its own
(unprivileged) account. This is how I currently set it up. Unless you
have good reasons to run it inside a VM, I'd suggest to go for this
solution. It will spare you a lot of headaches related to networking,
while still maintaining a reasonable level of isolation and security.
