Also, you might consider technology to improve uptime. Perhaps installing a
RAID array (even just mirroring), adding a UPS configured to do a clean
shutdown before running completely down, with BIOS configuration to
auto-restart when the power comes back, etc.
With some work it's even possible to set up a cheap SSD-based system (e.g.
CF card) that is basically guaranteed to boot at least far enough that you
can SSH in, even if the spinning storage dies.
And, of course, you could go whole hog with redundant power supplies, or
even a full warm/hot standby system with automatic replication and failover
;-)
Anyway, as I said before, I trust your judgment on what makes sense. To me,
the real purpose of the uptime requirement isn't so much to really ensure
all of our servers have at least X% uptime, it's to ensure that the people
operating them _care_ about uptime.
