According to the ​Roadmap, this is slated for 2.0.

As a temporary workaround, you can add an image of a pony in, say, $BASEDIR/public_html/pony.jpg, and then it will be served at http://$GATEWAY:$PORT/static/pony.jpg (I think; needs testing). I realize this is a poor substitute for the real thing.

The forward-compatibility offer of a pony regrettably had to be backed out as part of simplifying the branch: ​https://github.com/davidsarah/tahoe-lafs/commit/754d3262555c90b32cc05eabf177f062cd73d1ba.

Maybe setuptools 0.9 (see #2044) will support this use case?

Having read ​this sobering treatise on possible long-term consequences of this feature, I think perhaps we need to give more serious consideration to the potential down-sides.
