As a temporary workaround, you can add an image of a pony in, say, $BASEDIR/public_html/pony.jpg, and then it will be served at http://$GATEWAY:$PORT/static/pony.jpg (I think; needs testing). I realize this is a poor substitute for the real thing.

The forward-compatibility offer of a pony regrettably had to be backed out as part of simplifying the branch.

Maybe setuptools 0.9 (see #2044) will support this use case?
According to the Roadmap, this is slated for 2.0.
