Well, the --help output for specific commands doesn't include the "global" options. I think that's a regression (in 1.10?); it definitely used to.

That would definitely have helped. I discovered very late that -d was global.

-d actually works in all of those cases. -C is for backward compatibility. We could deprecate -C, but I'm not convinced it's necessary.
